Our University
Established in 1899, South University is a private academic institution dedicated to providing educational opportunities for the intellectual, social and professional development of a diverse student population. South University offers educational programs at the associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels with campuses located in Savannah, Ga., Columbia, S.C., West Palm Beach, Fla., Tampa, Fla., and Montgomery, Ala.
South University also operates South University Online (online.southuniversity.edu) which offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees to students want the freedom to attend class any time – day or night – from anywhere you connect to the Internet.
In recent years, South University has experienced continued growth and now boasts a record enrollment, more programs that at any time in its history and a respected reputation for delivering quality university-level education programs.
We believe that today’s educational challenges extend well beyond the academic institution, with a significant impact on society as a whole and we adopted a different approach to education – one that requires a long overdue transformation of education that will enhance student learning – Critical Thinking.
Currently, courses in many higher learning institutions are presented in the traditional “chalk and talk” style, in which faculty give lectures that cover large amounts of content as quickly as possible. Content goes in the student’s ear, down the arm, out the pen and onto paper, from which it is memorized for a test and then quickly forgotten. Students are told what to learn without having to work to actually learn it. In short, they never possessed an essential understanding of the material to start with.
The challenge exists at both the faculty and student levels. South University is changing the learning habits of its students as much as the teaching methods of its faculty. We believe that students who become competent critical thinkers take possession of the content. They understand more deeply, learn how to write more skillfully and how to read more analytically. Moreover, they acquire the skills needed for lifelong learning.
We believe so strongly in it, that we have made it the centerpiece of a university-wide quality enhancement plan and the overall mission of the university now encompasses offering a curriculum that specifically promotes critical thinking and effective communications skills – for all students in all academic disciplines.
While South University has grown to include a total of five campuses and a growing online program, the institution prides itself on personal attention, quality education and a commitment to the student that doesn’t stop once they complete their application.
