Professional Counseling

The South University Master of Arts degree program in Professional Counseling is designed to meet the local and regional need for qualified professional counselors. The emphasis of this program is on community and agency counseling. The primary objective of the program is to provide comprehensive academic preparation for a graduate to become a professional counselor, subject to applicable state licensure requirements.

The program is structured to permit students to pursue their master’s degree while balancing the rigors of work and home. Classes meet on Saturday and in the evenings on some campuses. Students have the opportunity to complete two classes each quarter and should check with an Admissions Officer on class times.

Students who enroll in the program are taught using two primary modes of instruction. The majority of the program involves didactic and experiential classroom instruction, supplemented by computer-based assignments using Internet technology. The second mode of instruction focuses on supervised field experiences. Students are placed in actual community counseling settings and practice counseling under the auspices of an on-site supervisor.
