Admissions
Admissions criteria for this program are consistent with those required in other master’s
degree-level programs at South University. As the Admissions Committee also takes into
consideration the qualities deemed essential to becoming a professional counselor, applicants
are evaluated on qualities including personal integrity, maturity, interpersonal skills, and
the ability to communicate effectively.
The criteria used in determining admission to the Professional Counseling Master of Arts
degree program include:
- A completed bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
- A grade point average of at least 2.70 (on a scale of 4.0) for the last 60 hours of coursework (including
relevant graduate work). Applications with grade point averages lower than the stated program minimum may be considered for admission with significant evidence of academic and professional potential demonstrated by the career and/or personal accomplishments indicated in the personal statement of academic and professional goals, the career résumé, academic, or professional letters of recommendation, and GRE Scores. Consult the South University Catalog admission section, “Procedure for Admission to the Professional Counseling Program.”
- A minimum paper-based TOEFL score of 600 or the electronic-based TOEFL score of 250 (for
English as a Second Language [ESL] students ONLY).
- A successful on-campus interview with either the Professional Counseling Program Director
or an individual designated by the Director.
- A completed admission application, including the $50 application fee.
- Please attach a 2 to 4 page typed personal statement addressing your interest in the areas
of psychology and mental health, and how that interest fits with your personal and professional goals.
- An official transcript from all postsecondary schools attended (official transcripts forwarded
by those postsecondary institutions to South University).
All materials will be reviewed and evaluated. Applicants will be notified regarding acceptance.
