Professional Counseling
Message from the Director
Welcome to the Department of Behavioral Sciences at South University. As a department, we are dedicated to high teaching standards, developing intellectual curiosity in our students, advancing critical thinking, and providing our students with individualized attention. Currently, the Master of Arts (M.A.) in Professional Counseling degree is offered at each of our campus locations. The program is designed for the working professional with classes being offered on Saturdays (and some weeknights).
The Professional Counseling degree program provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the theories, principles, and dynamic applications in the field. Students learn and develop the counseling skills necessary to provide the appropriate mental health assessment and treatment for individuals in need and are exposed to the ethical, legal and professional issues associated with such practice. The program promotes an understanding and appreciation of individual and cultural diversity and instills an awareness of the need for ongoing education.
Students are exposed to classroom, practicum, internship and professional seminar experiences over nine (9) academic quarters with each quarter lasting 10 weeks each. Following the successful completion of the degree requirements, graduates of the program are able to begin the process of licensure at the state level as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and a career in professional counseling.
We urge you to explore our web page in order to learn more about the program, however, please feel free to access the contact information page for more information. Thank you for your interest in the Master of Arts in Professional Counseling program at South University.
