Program Information

The South University, Columbia Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling degree program is intended to meet the local and regional need for qualified counselors.

The flexible delivery structure of the program provides the opportunity for you to balance the rigors of work and home while pursuing your master’s degree. Classes generally meet each Saturday and weeknights as needed. The program is designed to be completed in 8 quarters, full time. Each quarter over 10 weeks in length, with an 11th week designated for the final exam.

As a student in the South University, Columbia Clinical Mental Health Counseling degree program, you will have the opportunity to learn from faculty members who are dedicated to maintaining high teaching standards, developing intellectual curiosity, advancing critical thinking, and engaging in service to the University, community, and profession.

Types of Instruction

You will be taught via two primary modes of instruction. The majority of the program will involve didactic and experiential classroom instruction. The second mode of instruction will focus on supervised field experiences. You will be placed in actual counseling settings in the community and will practice counseling under the auspices of an onsite supervisor. While in a field placement, you will also receive weekly individual and group supervision from qualified faculty supervisors.

The program is designed to enable program graduates to achieve all initial eligibility criteria to become a licensed mental health clinician and eligible to be certified as a National Certified Counselor (NCC) by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC). The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is set up on an 8 quarter program full time and the courses are in accord with the licensing requirements of the states in which the program is offered. As a result, the program may not meet the licensing requirements of all states. The student should contact the licensing board in the state in which they anticipate seeking licensure to determine the appropriate program.

Program Outcomes

The MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is designed to provide students with a solid foundation for the practice of clinical mental health counseling.

The program is structured to develop the attitudes, knowledge, and skills that are essential for clinical mental health counselors. Students will have the opportunity to learn how to function effectively and ethically as a skilled professional, to appropriately apply clinical and intervention skills, and work in a variety of settings with a diverse client population.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be prepared to become professional clinical mental health counselors, subject to state licensure requirements.
