South University's Physician Assistant (PA) Program is pleased to have this year's 2008 Physician Assistant Education Association's (PAEA) Education Forum right here in Savannah at the Hyatt Regency October 29 to November 2. Department Chair for South University's PA Program, Robert Philpot Jr., Ph.D., PA-C, will present two workshops with colleagues on team building and team-based learning strategies in the classroom.
Dr. Philpot is the Executive Director of the Team-Based Learning Collaborative (TBLC), an international organization of educators dedicated to the research, development and implementation of team-based learning in higher education. TBLC provides support to other faculty implementing team-based learning, shares teaching resources, and promotes evaluation and scholarship on team-based learning in higher education.
"South University's PA Program is one of only four PA programs in Georgia and having the Education Forum in Savannah is fortunate for us because our faculty can attend the forum in greater numbers than previous years, and we have the added pleasure of showing our colleagues around town," said Dr. Philpot. "The forum is a real resource for PA educators because providing students with the skills needed to become successful Physician Assistants in the rapidly changing field of medicine is a real challenge. With the guidance of talented faculty, the students must master clinical and highly technical material as well as develop the interpersonal skills to deliver quality patient care."
On Friday, October 31, Dr. Philpot and Assistant Professor, Catherine Grant, PA-C, MSPAS, will jointly conduct a workshop entitled Using Team-Based Learning to Transform the Classroom Experience. The workshop will describe the strengths of team-based learning and how the principles of this approach inject joy into the learning process. The selected case study: Ghost Hunting: how to find the ghost of James Habersham, Jr. at the Olde Pink House will require participants to develop impromptu roles and engage in critical thinking and collaborative problem solving.
Saturday, November 1, Dr. Philpot will lead a second workshop entitled Quick and Easy Strategies to Build Effective Learning Teams with colleague Assistant Professor, John Sheffield, PA-C, MSPAS, where participants will learn how to lead team-building activities in the classroom.
The Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA) is the only national organization in the United States representing physician assistant educational programs. The PAEA
Educational Forum provides workshops, expert panel presentations, focused discussion sessions, among other presentations for participants to attend. PA educators can earn CME (continuing medical education) credits through the American Association of Physician Assistants. South University will send eight faculty members to participate in the Education Forum.
