Growing up in the small town of Midway, Georgia, just south of Savannah, Demetrius Hill was determined at a young age to expand his understanding of human behavior. In high school, he spotted a need among his classmates struggling academically. He recognized not only academic needs but social challenges as well, and Demetrius longed not only to understand the life challenges going on in his community but also to encourage personal successes for friends he saw soldiering in dark family circumstances.

“I was caught up in the wonder of it all, initially. What had been the tipping point that pushed certain young people into self-destructing behaviors?” Demetrius often reached out to those he saw struggling around him, and taking interest in his friends lives by offering them free tutoring. Through his efforts to connect and help in his own community, he found a growing desire to help his friends overcome their given circumstances. And that desire grew to aid others outside his hometown community as well.

“The world has always needed to know everyone is worthy, and we are all important. I came to South University to study psychology because I wanted to help my friends get out of some bad situations in life. I will leave South ready to help others go much further in a positive direction. Now, I am even more eager to help those who’ve been hurt, who’ve falsely thought they have nothing to offer the world. It’s sad to believe circumstances rule. I love to see people survive, and I want to help others improve their own lives and their surroundings.”

As a freshman at South University, Demetrius is avidly pursuing his undergraduate studies in psychology. He thrives as a student on the experiences and inspiration born in his youth--to help others overcome life challenges and to realize their greatest potential as an individual. “The greatest lesson I’ve learned so far at South is—it’s okay to dream, but it’s even more important to work toward that dream to make it more than a dream -- make it a reality.”

It's not too late to apply for spring quarter!
