South University Honors Second Anesthesiologist Assistant Graduating Class; Class Achieves 100 Percent Pass Rate on National Certification Exam

Nineteen graduate students received their hoods as part of a ceremony held in Savannah on September 15 to honor only the second graduating class in the history of South University's Master of Medical Science in Anesthesiologist Assistant Program.

Dr. Bill Paulsen, Dean, School of Health Professions and Program Director of Academic Affairs welcomed the more than 200 attendees which included family, friends and invited guests.

"These graduates seated before you have worked tirelessly to be the best anesthetists that they can possibly be," said Dr. Paulsen. "They spent long hours studying, working in the lab, practicing skills in the mock operating room and delivering anesthesia care to patients under the direction of their preceptors."

Dr. Stacie Wong, Director for Clinical Affairs spoke to the class and congratulated them on their achivement. Lorie Davis, MMSc, AA-C, Class President spoke about her experiences and the accomplishments of the class while thanking the faculty and staff of South University for their support along the way.

Dr. Bruce Mallard, Interim President of the Savannah Campus hooded the candidates and a reception honoring the graduates was held immediately following the program.

The 2007 ceremony marked the second graduating class and a national achievement for its 19 graduates. The class was the only program in the country to have every student pass the national certification exam.

South University's Master of Medical Science in Anethesiologist Assistant program is an intensive 28-month program that prepares students to become Anesthesiologist Assistants (AA). The program was the third program of its kind to be established in the country and is one of only five programs today.

The program has been recognized for leading the way in developing an integrated curriculum taught in advanced facilities using the latest equipment. Students are prepared througha combination of classroom, laboratory, mock operating room and clinical experiences. South University was the first institution in the country to offers its students a fully-equipped mock operating room providing not only real-world simulation, but access to equipment that they will use in their clinical training in surrounding hospitals.

Students in the program have come from across the country and have received their undergraduate education from institutions such as Florida State University, University of Georgia, Georgia State University, Auburn University, Georgia Tech and others.
