Merydaliz Gerena was one semester into the physical therapy program at the University of Puerto Rico when she realized it wasn’t for her. Not the physical therapy aspect—but the college.
Although leaving Puerto Rico meant leaving home, and leaving the university meant transferring to a new school, she believed it was the right decision to make. Merydaliz knew she wanted to return to the United States to achieve her goals.
Her determination to find a career that would meet her need to help people for the rest of her life led her to South University’s physical therapist assisting program in Savannah, Ga.
“I always wanted to work with people; it is my passion.”
Now a member of the Class of 2010, Merydaliz is working to complete prerequisite courses. She notes the availability of her professors along with the balance of a professional yet fun environment as part of her positive experience as a South University student.
“We get to meet people and have fun as young students.”
Merydaliz also works on campus in addition to being a student. When not in class, she’s at the bookstore selling textbooks, making student ID cards and offering any other help she can provide. Her job also allows her to assist with events and faculty and staff from time to time.
Satisfied for now helping others through her on-campus job, Merydaliz anticipates the day when she’s working as a physical therapist assistant.
“By being a PTA, I get to help individuals who are struggling from an accident or injury and help them get back to their normal lives.”
