SAVANNAH, Ga. - March 23, 2009 - South University student Dominick Pannazzo was the first South University student to receive a scholarship award from the Porter G. Pierpont Educational Fund of the Savannah Downtown Rotary Club. Pannazzo is a sophomore Dean’s List student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology.
“The Rotary scholarship is prestigious, and I am proud of Dominick who is not only an impressive student but a remarkable person,” said Candace Goodwin, president of South University – Savannah. “Seeing him recognized for his scholarship during the Rotary Club lunch was significant for South University because this is the first time we have had a student become a Rotarian scholar, and for me, personally, it was a very special moment.”
Pannazzo learned about the Rotary Club’s scholarship opportunity from the university’s Dean of Student Affairs, Todd Cellini. He applied for the scholarship by writing a personal statement, completing an application and a letter of reference. The Rotary Club evaluated the students on several criteria including personal integrity and academic performance. The good news that he had been selected was delivered to Pannazzo by, Director of Career Services, Don Holland.
“The scholarship will allow me to return to my studies full time,” said Pannazzo. “I have to say, it felt good to be acknowledged by the Rotary for my hard work and I am looking forward to earning my psychology degree and applying for graduate school.”
The Rotary Educational Fund was started by Porter G. Pierpont in 1922 and seeks to express the Rotary’s strong support of higher education. The scholarships are awarded annually and are a significant part of the clubs service to the Savannah community.
