South University Faculty, Staff and Students Gear Up to Help Our Neighbors in Support of National Week of Service - April 19 – 25, 2009

(TAMPA, Fla.) April 16, 2009 - South University's faculty, staff and students will team up in a broad effort to Help Our Neighbors in during the National Week of Service April 19 to 25, 2009. The faculty, staff and students at South University are no strangers to community service. Since its inception, South University has been actively involved to community outreach with various projects ranging from health fairs to relocating hospital patients.


During the National Week of Service, the South University will collect donations for The Spring of Tampa Bay, a local shelter for battered adults and their children, as well as conduct an educational class on hygiene for the children. South University volunteers will also be reaching out to the community with Metropolitan Ministries Food and Outreach Services, who prepare over 12,000 meals per week for area residents. Additionally, The Girl Scouts of America, ages 6 to 9 years old, will be on campus April 24, at 4:00 p.m., to earn Health and Safety Badges. South University volunteers will host stations and teach on assigned topics such as Smoke Alarm Safety Station, Smoking is a Bad Habit Station and the First Aid Station.


"Helping our neighbors is part of the culture of South University. Many of our students are in nursing or physical therapy assistant programs, so service learning is an important part of our mission," South University President Dan Coble, RN, Ph.D., said.  "The faculty and staff are always looking for ways to help those in need, and the National Week of Service is a great opportunity to share the benefits of service learning."
