SAVANNAH, Ga. - March 13, 2009 - Dr. Robert Philpot presented Savannah Arts Academy student Andrew Gearhart the South University Innovation in Medicine & Health Science Award.

Four South University faculty members volunteered their time and expertise in the Savannah Ogeechee Regional Science and Engineering Fair (SORSEF) on February 25.  Devon Byrd, Ph.D., department chair and associate professor of psychology; Launa Lynch, Ph.D., assistant professor for pharmaceutical sciences; Robert Philpot, Ph.D., PA-C, department chair for physician assistant studies; and Roseane Maria Santos, Ph.D., assistant professor for pharmaceutical sciences, spent the morning evaluating projects entered by middle school and high school students from the Savannah area.

South University sponsored a special award for Innovation in the Medicine & Health Science category, which was earned by Savannah Arts Academy student, Andrew Gearhart, for his project titled: Are you bring more home from the supermarket than you paid for?. The award included a $150 scholarship and is given to the student whose project introduced the most promising new idea or method in the area of medicine and health science.

"Participating in this fair is inspiring to me," said Dr. Philpot. "To see how these young students approach old problems with new solutions and new ideas is exciting to me as an educator, and I hope I have the pleasure in teaching some of them in the future."

The three-day science and engineering fair is an annual competition from which the top 10 percent will advance to compete at the 2009 Georgia Science and Engineering Fair in Athens, Georgia, in early April. More than 150 participants from 35 private, public and home schools participated and competed in a variety of categories including engineering, environmental science, and chemistry, among others.
