New School of Pharmacy for South Carolina

Friday, October 09, 2009

South University announced today that the institution is opening a School of Pharmacy at their Columbia campus, which is in the Carolina Research Park located off Interstate Highway 77 at the Farrow Road exit.  The School of Pharmacy will offer an accelerated three-year Doctor of Pharmacy program (Pharm.D.) that is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). This is the third Doctor of Pharmacy program in South Carolina and received recent approval by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education matriculate students in June of 2010.

“South University’s Pharm.D. program is different because students are able to complete the curriculum in three years of study, instead of the more traditional four years,” said Brad Kauffman, president of South University. “There are less than ten accelerated programs in the US, and South University’s Pharm.D. program is the only one like it in South Carolina.”

The School of Pharmacy graduated its inaugural class in June of 2006 at South University’s campus in Savannah, Ga. and has 267 alumni throughout the U.S.

“The success of South University’s School of Pharmacy students is result of many factors,” said James E. Wynn, Ph.D., R.Ph., dean of the school of pharmacy. “Our faculty members come from across the country and are dedicated to providing a high quality pharmacy education to future practitioners.  This commitment, in conjunction with our highly integrated curriculum, prepares our students to deliver the highest level of service and care to their patients.”

South University is accepting applications through PharmCas for the School of Pharmacy’s Class of 2013, which begins on June 14, 2010. The application deadline for the class is February 1, 2010.  The program is highly competitive and expects to seat 65 students in the inaugural class in South Carolina.
