During class on Friday, April 16, Savannah High School teacher Beverly Grant was not expecting news cameras from WSAV-TV, but that is what happened when Chris Murray from WSAV and South University President Todd Cellini interrupted first period to deliver the South University Inspiration Award. Students were as surprised as Ms. Grant who was overcome with joy as she was handed a crystal award and a check for $1,200 made out to Savannah High School.

“The Inspiration Award is designed to recognize teachers in our community who do just that --inspire students to pursue higher education,” said Cellini. “There isn’t an easy way to measure the positive impact of teachers who encourage students to continue their studies, and this award let’s everyone in the community participate by voting for their most inspiring teacher.”

Voting began March 22, and since that time, students, colleagues, and everyone was encouraged to vote for one of the seven nominations for the award. Voting ended noon on April 12. Ms. Grant received 86,153 votes, nearly double the votes of any of the other six nominated teachers.

“I was pleased to be part of the South University Inspiration Award program because WSAV-TV is always looking for ways to support our local schools,” said news anchor Tina-Tyus Shaw.  “I also know from personal experience what a huge difference a great teacher can make.  My fourth grade teacher, Mrs. JoAnn Sowell, always pushed me to excel and to reach for the stars.”
