On June 4, South University, which traces its roots back to 1899 in Savannah, Georgia, dedicated its seventh campus, located in 32,600 square feet of space in the attractive and convenient Convergence Center in Virginia Beach’s popular Central Business District off Interstate 264.

Participating in a brief ceremony were Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms, State Senator Jeff McWaters, whose district includes the Convergence Center, South University Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Steven Yoho and Virginia Beach campus President Seth Saunders.  In his remarks, Mayor Sessoms declared June 4, 2010 as “South University Day” in Virginia Beach.

South University, which is accredited by the Commission of Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and is certified by the State Council of Higher Education in Virginia (SCHEV), is currently offering the following degree programs:

  • Associate of Science in Paralegal Studies
  • Bachelor of Arts in Psychology
  • Bachelor of Business Administration
  • Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice
  • Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management
  • Bachelor of Science in Legal Studies
  • RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Master of Arts in Professional Counseling
  • Master of Business Administration

The first quarter of classes at the Virginia Beach campus began April 5.  Summer quarter starts June 28.

At the dedication, Dr. Yoho thanked the Hampton Roads community for the warm welcome accorded to South University and noted that the university chose to locate in Virginia Beach because of the exceptional talent in the region and the historic dedication of Virginia citizens to the value of higher education. “Virginia is a state that appreciates higher education, and we can tell. We have discovered some amazing talent and professionalism, and hiring great people from the Hampton Roads region has been a pleasure.”

President Saunders recognized five students who serve in the campus’s Student Ambassador program and announced a new scholarship that will be available to students enrolling each fall.  “We look forward to helping bridge the gap from where students are today to where they want to go with both their educational and professional goals. I think our new South University -Virginia Beach Milestone Scholarships will prove to be a great way to help students realize those goals.”

Besides a range of varied sized classrooms on the first and second floors of Convergence IV, each imbedded with technology, South University-Virginia Beach features a distance learning center, library, bookstore, on-site security, student and faculty lounges, as well as health science labs.  The college focuses intently on meeting a student’s individual needs, including providing career counseling.  All classes, which are taught by qualified instructors, not graduate assistants, have small teacher-student ratios.  There is also a dress code for men and women, many of them adults who come to South University to learn new skills to compete in an ever-changing economy.

In addition to Virginia Beach, South University has a second Virginia campus in Richmond, and five other campuses in Columbia, South Carolina; Montgomery, Alabama; Savannah, Georgia; and Tampa and West Palm Beach, Florida.
