South University names Devin Byrd dean of the College of Health Professions

SAVANNAH, Ga. (Feb. , 2012)  – South University Chancellor John T. South, III, announced today that Devin Byrd, Ph.D. has been named the university’s Dean of the College of Health Professions. Dr. Byrd, who will report to Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Steven Yoho, Ph.D., will lead a reorganized College of Health Professions.

“Dr. Byrd has led the Department of Behavioral Sciences since 2006 and has shown that his fundamental passion for teaching results in strong academic programs and student success,” said Chancellor South. “His leadership of the College of Health Professions is crucial, as its programs are popular with students and will continue to grow as we work to address the country’s healthcare needs and professional shortages.”

The restructured College of Health Professions represents about 30 percent of the university’s student body based on Fall 2011 program enrollment. It is composed of the following programs:

  • Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling
  • Master of Medical Science in Anesthesiologist Assistant
  • Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies
  • Bachelor of Arts in Psychology
  • Associate of Science in Allied Health Science
  • Associate of Science in Physical Therapist Assisting
  • Associate of Science in Medical Assisting

Prior to his arrival at South University, Dr. Byrd was an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of South Carolina at Aiken (USCA). While at USCA, Dr. Byrd was active in research focusing on the biopsychosocial evaluation of depression and anxiety in children and young adults.

Dr. Byrd earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his Master of Science and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Tech, specializing in clinical child and adolescent psychology. He also completed his APA-approved internship in Child Clinical Psychology at Brown University. Dr. Byrd is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Psi Chi Psychological Honor Society, and the Southeastern Psychology Association.
