South University helps veterans offset educational costs by joining the Yellow Ribbon Program

Monday, August 03, 2009

South University has been approved to participate in the Yellow Ribbon program, a provision of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008. As a participant in the Yellow Ribbon Program, in states where South University has tuition rates greater than the amount the GI Bill benefits cover, the institutions will voluntarily be able to provide tuition assistance to veterans to help offset all or some of their education costs.

The Yellow Ribbon Program allows institutions of higher learning the ability to assist with tuition costs exceeding the GI Bill's current maximum benefit rate, based on the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition rate in the applicable state. South University will contribute an additional amount to eligible veterans to offset those expenses and The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will match the same amount as the school. The amounts available and conditions depend on the state in which the campus is located.

"We know our veterans bring a diversity of ideas and experiences to our student body and to our classrooms that is unmatched," said John T. South, III, chancellor of South University. "We are honored to participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program and to provide these men and women with the educational opportunities they deserve."

Veterans who have served at least 36 months of active duty following September 10, 2001, were honorably discharged after 30 days of active duty following September 10, 2001, and dependents eligible for Transfer of Entitlement under the Post- 9/11 GI Bill based on a veteran's service under the two prior criteria listed are eligible for the funding provided by the program.

Eligible veterans may contact the Student Financial Services department at the South University campus they are interested in attending to learn more about Yellow Ribbon Program participation.
