Alumnus: Shomy Easow

Growing up, Shomy Easow noticed a trend in his after-school jobs: he always worked in places that allowed him to improve the lives of others.
As a waiter he fed the masses; as a tutor he educated the youth; but it was helping to heal ailments as a Walgreen’s pharmacy technician that gave him his first taste for the medical field.
“I realized that I was a people-person, and that I can handle stress and deal with different types of people.”
Shomy tried pursuing engineering but soon realized it wasn’t for him. In search of other career options, he looked to his family for advice.
“Nursing is something that came into my mind. I have several family members who work in the medical field, especially as nurses, who recommended this as a good career.”
He found South University’s nursing program online and discovered a new campus had opened in his hometown of Tampa, Florida. In June 2008, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and now works with orthopedic joint replacement patients at Tampa General Hospital.
“My best experiences are when patients tell me at the end of the day that I’ve been great or they are going to miss me.”
Shomy credited his professors, classmates, and the “state-of-the-art” labs available to the nursing students in helping him prepare for his career.
“Overall all I think we grew as one family in Tampa, from campus to courses to building a reputation in our community.”
Content for now, Shomy plans to become a nurse practitioner and perhaps one day, put his passion for people and nursing to work in Third World countries.
