The South University Drug Information Center is a free drug information service provided by the School of Pharmacy to University faculty, consumers, and health care professionals in the surrounding Savannah and Southeastern Georgia area. The goal of the service is to promote patient care and education by assisting with medication-related inquires.

The Drug Information Center is equipped with state of the art medical and pharmacy resources. The service also works closely with the South University Library to obtain additional references, when necessary.

The primary focus of the service is drug-related questions, which can be classified within the following categories:

  • Drug availability
  • Therapeutics
  • Side effects
  • Adverse drug reactions
  • Drug interactions
  • Medication dosing & administration
  • Medication use in pregnancy and during breastfeeding
  • Drug compatibility & stability
  • Herbals/Natural products
  • Compounding
  • Pharmacokinetics
  • Medication cost
  • Foreign drugs
  • Drug identification

Limitation of Service

The intent of the South University Drug Information Center is to encourage open communication between healthcare providers and patients. The services offered by the Center are intended to augment patient care and education. Therefore, the Center has some limitations on the services it provides. These include:

  • Reserving drug identification queries to healthcare providers only
  • Referring poisoning and toxicology questions to poison control centers
  • Referring potential lawsuit inquiries to other consultants
  • Preparing in-service or presentations
  • Providing photocopies of articles due to copyright laws
