Began her healthcare career at the age of 16

South University Newsroom

Crystal May began her healthcare career at the age of 16, when she began working at a supermarket pharmacy. But she says years of working in healthcare settings didn’t open career doors for her the way her South University, Richmond Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management degree did.

“Having a degree has opened up so many different career opportunities that I would otherwise not been qualified for,” May explained. “My experiences in healthcare solely would not advance me to where I would like to be.  South University gave me the tools I need to be successful and validated my capabilities to be a successful professional.”

May now works as a pharmacy clinical coordinator at Virginia Premier Health Plan, Inc. where her duties include performing quality assurance review and oversight over a pharmacy benefits manager, reviewing pharmacy claim rejections for Medicare and Medicaid members and preparing pharmacy clinical and financial reports.

“Healthcare is an integral part of every one's lives and the US healthcare system is broken on so many levels.  I knew that I wanted to be a part of the changes and knew that I could only advance with a degree.”

May says the faculty and staff at South University were a key part of her success.

“The staff was the heart of my experience at South. The staff worked together to provide a positive learning environment and truly had passion in educating the students.  The staff helped me identify my strength and interest in the financial avenue of healthcare, and helped me see the benefits of pursuing this career.

“My professors were so engaged,” May continued. “They supplemented our course work with real life situations and their experiences.  They provided us opportunities to practice techniques we would be faced with in our careers.  The career counselor, Sue Lentini, helped me with the process of obtaining a new job, she took the time to prepare me for my interview.

May has this advice for other students returning to the classroom.

“You should be active learners and be curious about everything you are learning.  Take an interest in the subject matter, even if it is just a prerequisite, and build relationships with your professors.  They will help you achieve your goals in education, career, and your lives.”
