Education has provided me with a lifelong career and new beginning

South University Newsroom

When South University graduate Esther Romero reports to work every day as a registered nurse at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida she readies herself for a shift where both patients, and their families, will need her expertise and care.

“I coordinate patient safety and care using the nursing process. A regular day consists of planning with the team, administering medication, documenting, and ensuring that both patients and their families' needs are met accordingly,” she explains.

When Romero decided she wanted to pursue her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, she chose South University for a variety of reasons.

"After having moved around so much as a child due to my father being in the military, I wanted to attend a small campus that was close to home. South University provided an environment that was welcoming,” Romero says. “Also the nursing program at South University is highly respected.”

The South University faculty also made a big difference in Romero’s experience as a student.

“South University has an excellent team of educators who provided a great foundation for not just classroom nursing knowledge, but also for nursing in the real world.

“The staff is just amazing. They did not distance themselves from the students. They truly cared and wanted to ensure that I was successful."

Romero was so successful in her academic work that she graduated from South University with honors. But, she admits that earning her degree was not always easy.

"It is difficult and time consuming when it comes to getting a degree. Time management is critical and there are times that you will have to prioritize your studies ahead of friends and family. There may be balance between them, but sometimes you cannot have time for both.

“It is important to remember that the reward at the end of the tunnel will overshadow all the struggles.”

And Romero has other goals in her sights. She would eventually like to become a clinical nurse specialist, and hopes to begin that process in the next five years. But for now, she is enjoying the benefits of the career she worked so hard for.

“My education has provided me with a lifelong career and new beginning as a young adult.”
