Has a hard time imagining herself anywhere else

South University Newsroom

Her career was nearly derailed five years ago, but now South University, Online Programs graduate Annette Tornberg says she has found the job she wants to stay in until she retires.

Tornberg is the office assistant in business services at Yav Pem Suab Academy in Sacramento, California. It is a job Tornberg loves so much, that she has a hard time imagining herself anywhere else. And, she credits her South University, Online Programs education with helping her reach her goal.

“I feel that if I did not go back to school to further my education, my job search would not have come to this conclusion. I attended college twice in my twenties, but dropped out due to lack of enthusiasm. Going back to school and completing it online is why I am now finally employed,” she explains.

Tornberg served in the U.S. Army during the 1970’s, and later held a number of positions outside of the armed forces. When the United States was in the midst of an economic crisis in 2009, Tornberg says she was laid off. She spent time volunteering in her community before making the decision to go back to school and earn a degree.

“Going to school online and furthering your education in middle life has been a unique challenge, but in a very positive way.

“Counselors were available to assist me in my academics, and I have had a great experience with my current career counselor.” Tornberg continued, “My academic counselor kept me positive and showed me how proud she was of my accomplishments. My career counselor got my resume noticed.”

Now as the front office clerk at a charter school, Tornberg completes many duties daily that are crucial to the day-to-day operations of the institution. Her path here wasn’t easy, but she encourages others to consider the possibility of returning to college online for a degree.

“The first word of advice I have is make sure you have good time management skills if you are studying online,” Tornberg said.

She also has words of advice those in mid-life who are considering pursuing higher education.

“Don’t give up. You are never too old to learn.”
