Carmen Johnson had worked for more than two decades in the nursing field when she decided the time was right to advance her education and pursue a new degree.
“I worked many years as an associate’s degree registered nurse. After raising my children, I returned for my bachelor’s degree.”
Johnson chose South University, Novi and graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in 2017. Johnson says she chose to go back to school to help advance her career, and says the South University faculty “challenged me to be greater.”
“I have been empowered professionally,” Johnson says.
Johnson works as an occupational health nurse at a Ford Motor Company plant in Michigan. A routine day on the job includes providing wellness education for employees and managing any on-the-job injuries. But, Johnson has also been called on to administer lifesaving treatment. She was honored with the Ford Motor Company Safety Award for resuscitating an employee in cardiac arrest.
She has also poured her professional talents back into the community, coordinating a 2017 health care fair for the 35th Annual African World Festival in Detroit that included more than 100 volunteers from the fields of nursing, mental health and substance abuse treatment. She also worked on a relief mission in Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Irma.
Johnson says she intends to return to South University to earn a nurse practitioner’s degree. The advice she has for current South University students seems to mirror her own life, education and career.
“Stay focused, stay committed.”
