Job Title: Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
Day-to-Day Responsibilities: My day-to-day responsibilities include interviewing inmates who are suicidal/homicidal, determining appropriate housing for mentally ill inmates, making treatment plans for those that are housed in the Mental Health Unit, medication management (prescribing psychotropic medications, interpreting labs), mental health counseling.
What is the best part of your career? The autonomy-- I am supervised by a psychiatrist, but I have my patient load and manage them independently.
How did South University successfully prepare you for your career? South [University] prepared me for my career with the classroom and clinical hours we had to endure. This education has made a big difference in my life. I was an RN for twenty years and now I feel fulfilled at work.
What advice do you have for current students? Current students should sacrifice everything (within reason) and finish school then pass their licensing exams. Accomplishing those goals has made it (the blood, sweat and tears) all worthwhile.
