When South University, Online Programs graduate Tonya Hampton decided to go back to school, she was a thirty-five year old single mother raising two teenagers. Hampton earned her Bachelor in Business Administration from South University, Online Programs in 2013, and later landed a new role as a safety manager responsible for four plants, 75 acres of land and 250 employees.
“Persistence paid off,” said Hampton.
After graduation, Hampton was working at Clayton Homes/Cavalier Homes in Addison, Alabama when she learned her employer had an opening for a safety manager within one of its divisions. She applied, and beat out 59 other applicants for one of just three available positions.
“I am responsible for approximately 250 employees’ safety, health, and wellbeing—not to mention the environmental side of things,” Hampton explained. “I have to make sure we do not pollute the air and waterways.”
“I love being a leader,” Hampton said. “South University helped me reach my full potential in management skills. The faculty and staff always went out of their way to make sure that the University had a positive impact on its students.”
Hampton hopes her decision to go back to school – even while juggling the responsibilities of a family – is an inspiration to her own children one day.
“I hope that what I have achieved will encourage my children, who are just now reaching adulthood, to keep going,” she explains. “Be persistent. Never lose hope and keep your eye on the prize. It is such an awesome experience when you are finished. I am proud to tell people what I have achieved.”
