Federal Aid Options

The best place to start when looking for financial aid is through the federal government, for federal grants, loans and work study opportunities.

The Federal grants consist of the Pell Grant and the SEOG Grant, which are need based grants and given to students with the lowest demonstrated financial need. The Federal loans are low–interest loans that fall under the jurisdiction of the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program as part of the U.S. Department of Education’s Direct Loan Program. Work study opportunities are jobs for students who have a demonstrated financial need.

If you’re interested in applying for this federal aid, first meet with a financial aid officer – at the South University campus location of your choice – who can help to develop a financial aid plan based on your specific set of circumstances and explain what aid programs are available and their requirements. Financial aid is available to those students who qualify.

The Direct education loan program offers the following types of loans:

  • Subsidized: For students with demonstrated financial need, as determined by federal regulations. No interest is charged while a student is attending school at least half–time, and during the grace and deferment periods.
  • Unsubsidized: Not based on financial need; interest is charged during all periods, even during the time a student is in school and during grace and deferment periods.
  • PLUS: Unsubsidized loans for the parents of dependent students. PLUS loans help pay for education expenses up to the cost of attendance minus all other financial assistance. Interest is charged during all periods and a credit check will be required for the borrowing parent.
