Are you looking to increase your impact and enhance your credibility as a minister? Here are seven areas on which to focus your time and attention, so that you can be more effective in your ministry, better serve your congregation and community, and make a bigger difference as a ministry practitioner and leader.

1. Build relationships
To increase your impact, strengthen your relationships with your congregation and community. Do your best to listen, understand, and be available to them. You will likely also need to help strengthen relationships among those you serve. To do so, you’ll need to develop skills in managing and resolving interpersonal conflict and disputes among others.

2. Emphasize relevant issues
Connect with the people you serve by showing that you understand the influences, challenges, and scenarios they encounter in their lives. As a ministry practitioner, you can offer education, guidance, and support on relevant and emerging social, economic, and political issues through sermons and community outreach programs. At times, it may also be appropriate to advocate for change and encourage your congregation to take action.

3. Use technology
Technology is a powerful tool in today’s world. As a ministry practitioner, you can utilize technology such as social media, email, and video conferencing to stay better connected with your congregation and community. These tools can also help you amplify your message to a wider audience.

4. Collaborate with others
Work with other ministers, community leaders, and organizations to address community needs and make a positive impact. As a ministry practitioner, it is important that you are able to work effectively with those who have different religious beliefs (or none) as well as people of all races, ethnicities, ages, genders, and class.

5. Be authentic
Be authentic in your actions and speech, including sharing your own struggles and challenges. This can help build trust and create a more supportive community. If you struggle with sharing your authentic self, set aside time to reflect on your journey to and within the ministry. Think about how being more open and telling your story could benefit others.

6. Take care of yourself
Prioritize self-care, including rest, exercise, and sleep to avoid burnout. Doing so will help you maintain your energy and ability to serve effectively. In your daily life, plan time for interactions with loved ones as well as for solitude which can provide an opportunity to focus on your own spiritual growth.

7. Continuously develop your skills
The most effective ministry professionals are lifelong learners. You should always be looking for ways to advance your spiritual maturity, deepen your theological understanding, and spark your personal, intellectual, and professional growth. There are many conferences as well as books and journals designed to help you improve your skills in areas like pastoral counseling, communication, and leadership. Advancing your education is another way that you can further develop your skills.
