Physical therapist assistants are healthcare providers who work under the supervision of physical therapists. Their duties include assisting the physical therapist in implementing treatment programs according to a plan of care, training patients in exercises and activities of daily living, conducting treatments using special equipment, administering modalities and other treatment procedures and reporting to the physical therapist on the patient's responses.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor & Statistics, there were approximately 81,230 physical therapist assistants employed in 2015. Employment of physical therapist assistants is projected to grow by 41% from 2014 to 2024, which is much faster than the average for all occupations (http://www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/physical-therapist-assistants-and-aides.htm#tab-6).

The Associate of Science in Physical Therapist Assistant program offered by South University, Columbia is in the process of pursuing programmatic accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (“CAPTE”). Graduation from a CAPTE accredited program is a requirement to be eligible for licensure in the state of South Carolina. Until the Associate of Science in Physical Therapist Assistant program offered by South University, Columbia achieves accreditation, graduates will not be eligible for licensure in the state of South Carolina.

South University does not guarantee third-party certification/licensure. Outside agencies control the requirements for taking and passing certification/licensing exams and are subject to change without notice to South University.

Effective 11/11/15, South University Columbia has been granted Candidate for Accreditation status by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (1111 North Fairfax Street, Alexandria, VA, 22314; phone: 703-706-3245; email: accreditation@apta.org). Candidate for Accreditation is a pre-accreditation status of affiliation with the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education that indicates that the program is progressing toward accreditation and may matriculate students in technical/professional courses. Candidate for Accreditation is not an accreditation status nor does it assure eventual accreditation.
