Alexa Isabel Obregon posing in her nursing scrubsThe last year has been full of highlights for Alexa Isabel Obregon. Not only did she graduate from the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at South University, Tampa in 2024, she also received a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students®. Before graduating, Alexa also completed a preceptorship on her dream unit working with mothers and babies. Perhaps most exciting of all, Alexa has now successfully passed her NCLEX exam to become a registered nurse.

“I have wanted to become a nurse since the 8th grade when my grandfather passed away,” says Alexa. “I would watch the hospice nurses be part of his care, and I loved being involved with caring for him. I wanted to care for others the same way I did for him.”

While she was a student, many of her classmates, instructors, and patients noticed Alexa’s kindness and empathy. Her DAISY nominations also spoke of her integrity, professionalism, and drive.

“She consistently goes above and beyond to ensure her patients receive the highest level of care, often taking the time to listen and comfort them during difficult moments,” wrote one of her DAISY nominators. “Her positive attitude and gentle approach have a profound impact not just on her patients, but also on their families, helping to create a supportive and compassionate environment.”

Winning the DAISY award was meaningful and humbling for Alexa. “It was a wonderful recognition of the hard work, compassion, and dedication that I put into caring for patients. It also made me feel deeply appreciated by my classmates and patients, which reminds me of why I became a nurse in the first place,” she says. “This award is not just a reflection of my efforts, but also of the incredible teamwork and support I receive from everyone around me. It motivates me to continue giving my best and makes me even more passionate about my role in healthcare.”

As Alexa enters her nursing career, she is thankful for the ways in which the South University staff and faculty helped and encouraged her through the program. She is confident that her experiences at South University have prepared her well for being a nurse. “My education has taught me so much. Determination, discipline, and now how to save lives!”
