Meet Elizabeth Bloom, Paralegal Studies Graduate
It’s been nearly three decades since Elizabeth Bloom earned her Associate of Science in Paralegal Studies at South University, West Palm Beach in 1998. Still, the skills she learned back then remain relevant in her career today. In fact, those skills have helped her land and excel in her current role as a Senior Procurement Analyst in a renewable energy company. Using her understanding of the law and skills in legal writing, she prepares many important documents and assists with contract negotiations and management, among other duties. She also researches factors like pricing and lead times to inform procurement decisions.Job Growth and Duties as a Paralegal
After graduating from high school, Elizabeth chose to pursue her associate's degree in paralegal studies at South University. The West Palm Beach campus was near her home, and the paralegal program aligned with her career goals. After earning her Paralegal Studies degree from South University, Elizabeth worked at several law firms and other companies, trying to decide what type of law she was most passionate about.
“Having a specialized program with a variety of legal classes enhanced my knowledge base to use in my career, Elizabeth says. “My education has provided me with valuable jobs since graduation. It prepared me to be a Paralegal in various topics of the law.”
As a paralegal, Elizabeth worked under the supervision of attorneys to
- Help with litigation case management and strategy
- Draft legal motions, orders, and discovery requests and responses
- Prepare for and assist at depositions and trials
- Obtain, organize, and analyze discovery documents and public records
- Assist in meeting permitting requirements
- Research historic maps, photos, and meteorological data for environmental matters
- Conduct and review title searches and real estate closings, including preparing contracts and other closing documents
Expanding Responsibilities and Opportunities
Eventually, Elizabeth began taking on executive assistant and administrative duties as well. She managed and organized calendars, travel itineraries, and meetings. She recorded attorney time and helped with expense reports and billing. She also became more focused on contract administration. “I landed for many years in the environment, land use, real estate, and renewable energy field,” she shares. “I became very engaged in reviewing title work and contracts and managing lead attorneys and executives. My current role in procurement at a renewable energy company puts this background to work.”Elizabeth started her job in procurement in 2023 and was promoted to senior level in 2024. She is a Certified Paralegal with the National Association of Legal Assistants, a Florida Certified Paralegal, a Florida Registered Paralegal with the Florida Bar, and a Florida Notary Public.
Elizabeth is also Co-Founder of Keeping Inspired Dreams Sound, a non-profit that provides scholarships for sports expenses, academic assistance at all educational levels, and essential classroom supplies for teachers.
