Becoming a physician assistant (PA) goes beyond building clinical knowledge and skills. PA students also need to know how to present their experience to prospective employers, communicate effectively in professional settings, navigate the job search process and prepare for interviews. Career Services may be an important resource throughout that process, helping students turn their education and experiences into the tools they need to pursue their career goals. At South University, our Career Services & Alumni Relations teams are a big part of helping all of our students (and our graduates!) grow and get ready for what’s next. As part of that mission, they help plan and host program-specific events and resources. This fall, our Career Services and Alumni Relations teams partnered with PA programs at four South University campuses to help students connect with employers, prepare their CVs, get ready for interviews, and continue their overall professional development. Healthcare workers rely on professional connections as well as clinical ones

PA Career Fairs

Both our Richmond and Savannah campuses held PA career fairs this fall for students expected to graduate in 2027. Over 100 students joined the fairs, meeting directly with employers to discuss the PA profession and future career opportunities.

By speaking directly with healthcare employers, our students were able to learn more about different practice settings, understand what organizations look for in PA candidates, and begin building professional connections before they graduate. Such conversations may also help our students better understand the variety of career paths available to physician assistants.

Healthcare organizations who participated this fall included:

  • Sentara Health
  • US Acute Care Solutions
  • UVA Health
  • Virginia Commonwealth University Health System
  • Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU
  • Mary Washington Healthcare
  • CHKD Pediatric Urgent Care PA Fellowship
  • University of Lynchburg Doctor of Medical Science Program
  • Vituity Emergency Medicine
  • Your Health
  • Savannah Age Management Medicine
  • U.S. Army Medical Recruiting
  • Nemours Children's Hospital
  • Georgia Primary Care Association

A highlight of the event was seeing South University PA graduates return as healthcare professionals and employer representatives. For example, from South University, Richmond, LaToya Raby, PA Class of 2019, attended on behalf of Sentara Health, and Corwin Bernard, PA Class of 2025, represented US Acute Care Solutions. Their involvement provided students with firsthand career insight while also highlighting the strength of South University's alumni and employer partnerships.

PA Career Development Workshops

That same week, our Austin and West Palm Beach campuses held career development workshops for over 70 students in their PA programs. For PA students approaching graduation, having a strong CV and being prepared for an interview can be just as important as knowing what to expect in the clinical setting. The workshops gave students a chance to focus on these professional skills while also discussing the expectations they may encounter in the workplace as they begin their PA careers.

Preparing Future PAs for What's Next

Whether they're attending a career fair, refining their CV, or practicing for an interview, PA students can start preparing for their careers well before graduation. Our Career Services team works alongside South University students to provide opportunities to develop these valuable professional skills, make connections, and learn from active healthcare professionals. For PA students, these experiences can help bridge the gap between the classroom and the workplace as they prepare to begin the next chapter of their careers.
