The legal field always held a special appeal for Crystal G. Peebles. Even as a child, she dreamed of growing up to become an attorney. But that dream was delayed when Crystal didn’t go to college right out of high school.
“Throughout my twenties, I wanted to attend the local community college to obtain a certificate or associate degree in Paralegal Studies. However, as a young woman with a family and a full-time job, my schedule was just too hectic to attend the ground classes being offered at the local community college,” Peebles explained.
Peebles was thirty years old when she landed an office job with the firm Richardson Plowden & Robinson, P.A. Around the same time, a friend decided to pursue a degree taking online classes. Peebles realized online courses might be the solution to balancing a new job, the responsibilities of her family, and academics.
“I remember thinking, if I could take online college classes then I could possibly have a career in the legal field that I have always wanted,” Peebles recalls. “I started doing some online research and I came across the Legal Studies program at South University. I called South University and spoke to an admissions counselor who explained the program to me and walked me through the admissions process. I made a decision that day that changed my life forever.”
Peebles worked hard, both at school and the office. She moved up the ladder at Richardson Plowden & Robinson, P.A., while continuing to work on her degree. Peebles earned her degree, with honors, in 2013. She believes the hard work, coupled with perseverance, were the keys to her success. She says the plan that worked for her, can also work for others.
“Work hard and keep pushing yourself toward the finish line, it is always closer than you think. There are many times I wanted to give up during my journey, because online classes are not as easy as one may think. However, when graduation day came it was worth everything I put into it. I was so proud of myself, not to mention how proud my family was of me.
“South University changed and shaped my life in many ways. I am more mature, responsible and independent than I was before attending college. The classes allowed me to build knowledge, skills and discover new passions in the legal field. My degree has helped me obtain three promotions at Richardson Plowden & Robinson, P.A. With my work experience, degree and newly found confidence to reach for the stars, there are no limitations for me.”
