When you think about a career in technology, what comes to mind? Maybe coding software, fixing hardware, or analyzing data? What if you’re interested in how people think, act, and interact with the digital world? There's a career field* for that too: Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)!

What Is Human-Computer Interaction?

Human-Computer Interaction, or HCI, is all about designing and improving how people interact with computers, apps, websites, and newer technologies like virtual reality and artificial intelligence. The goal of this field is to make technology more user-friendly, efficient, and enjoyable.

HCI experts study how different groups of people engage with technology. They try to understand each group’s goals, thoughts, and behaviors and then use that knowledge to create better digital experiences. Have you ever used an app that was so intuitive it felt like second nature? Or struggled with a website where it was impossible to find what you needed? That’s HCI in action—either at its best or its worst!

What Types of Jobs are Available in HCI?

The human-computer interaction field blends technology, psychology, and design. If you choose to work in HCI, you could find yourself in roles** such as:

  • User Experience (UX) Designer – UX designers help create technology and software that is easy to use, helpful, and even delightful.
  • Usability Researcher – Usability researchers study how and why people interact with technology. They then look for ways to improve those experiences.
  • Interaction Designer – Interaction designers shape how users navigate apps, websites, and software.
  • Accessibility Specialist – Accessibility specialists test and inform technology products to ensure people of all abilities can use them effectively.
Would Human-Computer Interaction Be a Good Fit for You?

As technology continues to evolve, HCI will always be important. Whether designing intuitive mobile apps, developing user-friendly AI, or ensuring accessibility in technologies from websites to virtual reality, HCI professionals will shape how we interact with tomorrow’s technology.

HCI might be a great career path for you if you:

  • Enjoy problem-solving and creative thinking
  • Feel drawn to both technology and psychology
  • Like designing or improving things to make them more efficient
  • Pay attention to details and how things function
  • Are curious about the why behind people’s decision
  • Want to make technology that everyone can use

As technology continues to evolve, HCI will always be important. Whether designing intuitive mobile apps, developing user-friendly AI, or ensuring accessibility in technologies from websites to virtual reality, HCI professionals will shape how we interact with tomorrow’s technology.

Even if you choose a different career path in tech, knowing the basics of how people interact with technology is helpful for many IT careers.
