Randolph Cuthbert: US Veteran, Psychology Grad, and Author
After eight years as a Cavalry Scout in the US Army, Randolph Cuthbert retired from the military and moved into entrepreneurship. As he did so, he decided to further his education, earning a Psychology degree online at South University in 2026. Today, Randolph uses what he learned in his psychology program to write children’s books focused on literacy and family engagement.
“Completing my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at South University gave me vital insight into developmental psychology and human behavior, which directly guides the themes and creative structure of my books,” Randolph shares.
Studying Online at South University
As a father of 13 and grandfather of 11, Randolph chose South University for its flexible online classes. Moving from military to civilian life was hard at times, but online classes made it easier to manage his busy entrepreneurial and family life. “It proved to be the ideal, supportive environment for returning to complete my degree as an adult learner,” Randolph says.
The instructors were also helpful to Randolph. “The instructors provided constructive, timely feedback that continually sharpened my analytical skills. Their accessibility and encouragement made navigating difficult coursework feel engaging rather than overwhelming,” he says. “Their genuine commitment to student success kept me accountable and motivated to finish strong.”
How Studying Psychology Shaped His Writing
By studying Psychology at South University, Randolph gained a strong scientific understanding of human behavior and developmental stages. In his classes, he learned many psychology concepts that he uses in his books to teach kids about emotional regulation, empathy, and creative problem-solving. His children’s book series Story Time with Pop Pop includes The Day I Ran Away and The Fishing Trip. He has also created the Activity Time with Pop-Pop companion workbooks.
“The coursework taught me how children process emotions, solve problems, and absorb information,” he says. “This insight directly informs my work as an author creating emotionally resonant children's books and activity guides. It also enables me to better serve families by addressing core childhood cognitive and emotional needs.”
What’s Next for Randolph
Randolph writes under C Family Media, which he founded and leads. Inspired by his passion for family and education, Randolph plans to continue publishing books. He also wants to create an online platform with animated storytelling, interactive learning applications, and expanded developmental workbooks.
“Seeing these books and activities reach children, spark a love for reading, and encourage meaningful family conversations is one of my proudest achievements,” he says.
Through his work, he hopes to promote early childhood literacy, learning, and family bonding. “I actively work to provide families with affordable, engaging tools that build reading comprehension and cognitive development in young children,” he says. “I also take time to mentor youth and share life lessons on discipline, resilience, and personal responsibility gained from my military and business experience.”
An Inspiration to Others
Getting a Psychology degree was a meaningful accomplishment in Randolph’s life - and one that helped him find a new path. Now, he hopes his story will inspire others to go after their dreams too.
“Earning this degree strengthened my confidence and broadened my perspective on what I can accomplish. It allowed me to set a powerful example of lifelong learning and discipline for my entire family. Ultimately, it gave me purposeful momentum for my career as an author and publisher,” he shares.
“I also hope my journey serves as an inspiration for fellow veterans and adult learners,” he adds. “It is never too late to earn a degree, reinvent yourself, and build a lasting legacy.”
