My name is April Vance, I am the interim department chair for legal studies where students are actively engaged in pursuit of a Bachelor of Science in Legal Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences.

The Bachelor of Legal Studies program really is designed for the student who wants to be a paralegal in a law firm, any legal setting. So, what does it offer? The exciting study of law, everything that the law entails. We have a really good program for students. In a typical class a student will work in theory and in application. So, we are going to give you the book knowledge that you need, we are going to teach you the theory and the law, you do need to know the legal jargon. How do refer to items? When we are talking legal speak, you need to be able to know exactly what that is. Additionally, we teach you applications. Students are going to be actively engaged in filling out forms, drafting memorandum. But what you do find here at South University is a teacher that's willing, ready, and able to assist you. A teacher that is well versed in their particular area of the law and that when you come ready and willing to learn, that we're here to get you on to your goal of becoming an active paralegal.

Bachelor of Science in Legal Studies

Paralegals and legal assistants are essential in helping lawyers prepare for hearings, trials, and corporate meetings. At South University, our partially online Bachelor of Science in Legal Studies can provide you with the relevant skills and experience to excel in an entry-level paralegal position within a law firm, bank, insurance company, governmental agency, or corporation.

This partially online Legal Studies program can give you a strong foundation in general education, analytical and critical thinking skills, theoretical legal concepts, and practical legal applications. Through our in-depth legal coursework, you can learn how to manage challenging assignments under the supervision of a licensed attorney involving:

  • Investigating and collecting evidence
  • Researching laws
  • Interviewing clients and witnesses
  • Preparing documents for litigation or business transactions
  • Assisting an attorney at trial

While you can take the majority of your courses online, all students in the partially online Legal Studies degree program must complete at least 4 legal specialty courses (totaling at least 16 quarter hours of credit) in a traditional classroom format.

  • Display enhanced communication skills, including public speaking, letter and memorandum writing, and complex legal drafting under attorney supervision.
  • Conduct advanced legal research, utilizing acute critical thinking, reasoning, and analytical approaches to legal problem solving.

      Our partially online Legal Studies degree program offers online classes that let you access academic resources and coursework whenever it’s most convenient, day or night. Meanwhile, on-campus evening and weekend classes also accommodate your busy schedule, while giving you face-to-face interaction with faculty and peers.

      Our Legal Studies degree program includes a 120-hour supervised paralegal externship that allows you to practice everything you’ve learned in the program by working in a private legal office, government agency, real estate or title company, bank, or corporate legal department. This experience bridges the gap between the classroom and the workplace and offers practical training that can help you hit the ground running in your career.
