The South University School of Pharmacy Postgraduate Year 1 (PGY-1) Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program currently offers a 12-month pharmacy practice residency to a highly motivated candidate who desires to enhance patient care services in the community pharmacy. This program builds upon the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum to develop practitioners who excel in areas of patient care, leadership, and education skills. Responsibilities include longitudinal experiences designed to develop skills in the areas of patient care, dispensing, pharmacy management, research, and teaching. The resident will also participate in activities to enhance their professional and community involvement. The majority of the resident's time will be spent in developing the skills necessary to become an innovative leader in delivering patient care services in the community pharmacy. During the program, the resident can also expect to participate in pharmacy management, business planning, teaching, and research. The resident receives instructor-level appointment within the School of Pharmacy and is trained in teaching through a formalized Teaching and Learning Certificate Program. At the conclusion of the program, residents are prepared to enter the workforce, explore professional certifications, pursue fellowships, or pursue postgraduate year two (PGY-2) resident training programs.

Richmond Hill Pharmacy is an independent, community pharmacy that has been serving customers in the Richmond Hill, GA, area for over 25 years. The pharmacy has grown from a small pharmacy to a modern pharmacy offering traditional services, quality products, and friendly service. Richmond Hill Pharmacy acts as a site for student pharmacists to provide them with practical experience in various aspects of the profession of pharmacy. Students can gain useful, hands on experience in problem solving and providing patient care services in a community setting.
Richmond Hill Pharmacy offers multiple patient-centered services and specializes in drug compounding for patients who need individualized medication therapy. Other services include:
The patient care component aims to immerse the resident in patient care experiences offered in the community pharmacy. The resident will spend the majority of his/her time offering direct patient care services through dispensing, medication therapy management (MTM) services, disease state management, health care team collaboration, and transition of care services. Throughout this longitudinal experience, the resident will gain experience delivering MTM services on multiple platforms, administering immunizations, participating in diabetes self-management education, and other clinical community pharmacy services, including disease-state management and health promotion. As patient care is the largest outcome of the community pharmacy residency, the resident will participate in direct patient care services for approximately 30 hours each week, including the time spent dispensing medication. At the conclusion of the residency, the resident is expected to have proficient clinical knowledge of clinical guidelines, be able to develop collaborative relationships as a member of the health care team, and be able to practice in accordance with federal and state policies, procedures, and regulations.
The dispensing component aims to familiarize the resident with traditional pharmacy dispensing activities and to incorporate the delivery of clinical pharmacy services into these activities. The resident will be responsible for staffing on a weekly basis. The date/time of weekly shift will rotate to ensure the resident has exposure to opening and closing procedures, differences in staffing requirements based on daily volume, and familiarity with all members of the staff. In addition, one Saturday shift per month will be required to give the resident experience staffing independently and with varying staff support. As the resident progresses through the year, he/she will be expected to take on more responsibility, managing the staff and all of the associated duties within the shift.
The purpose of the management component is to expose the resident to various facets of management within the community pharmacy. Throughout this longitudinal experience, the resident will participate in activities regarding site operations and services, quality improvement activities, and will develop a new or enhance an existing pharmacy service. Much of this experience will be the resident's legacy at the pharmacy and will serve to continually improve both the operations of the pharmacy and the rich experience for the resident. This experience will comprise approximately 4 hours of the resident's time per week.
The leadership component of the residency aims to expose the resident to various leadership opportunities both inside and outside of the pharmacy. As a pharmacist, it is important for the resident to understand the importance of being a leader in daily pharmacy workflow, larger pharmacy organizations, and within the community. This longitudinal experience will give the resident the opportunity to develop his/her leadership style and dedicate time to the profession and people served by the pharmacy. While this is a longitudinal experience, the resident is expected to incorporate leadership skills into all facets of the residency.
The purpose of the research component is to expose the resident to the research process. The resident, in conjunction with the site coordinator, will choose a topic relevant to the pharmacy practice to research in a longitudinal project. The resident will work through the process of researching the topic, developing methods for the research, applying for and securing IRB approval, conducting the research, analyzing outcomes, and presenting the research as a poster at a national meeting and as a podium presentation at a regional meeting. At the culmination of the research, the resident will develop a manuscript and submit for publication.
The teaching component of the residency will allow the resident to gain experience in teaching, both experientially and academically. During the course of the year, the resident will be responsible for precepting student pharmacists, leading small group discussions, teaching community classes, educating patients and teaching in large group lecture formats. The resident will also participate in the longitudinal Teaching and Learning Certificate Program, which aims to provide formal training to prepare residents to assume educator roles at the conclusion of residency.
Note: Any leave not used will be forfeited at the completion of the residency program.
