On February 24, 2024, South University, Savannah held their first annual Scrubs Camp for local high school students.

The Scrubs Camp gave high school students the opportunity to explore our many medical, clinical, and healthcare programs to see which potential professions and career paths they enjoyed most. Students got to attend open Q&A forums, lectures, and some hands on learning opportunities in our labs and classrooms. The high school students got to explore our Nursing (BSN), Medical Assisting (AS), Physical Therapy Assistant (AS), Physician Assistant (MSPA), Anesthesia Science (MMSc) and Pharmacy (PHARMd) programs with our faculty and current students teaching and overseeing. They practiced, simulated, and learned how to identity blood types, attempt neuraxial anesthesia, airway anatomy/endotracheal intubation, ultrasounds, x-rays, EKGs, direct and video laryngoscopy, anatomy, correct bone formation and movements, take vitals, make hand sanitizer and chapstick from scratch, proper handwashing, diagnose cases, proper PPE, and much more!

Students also got to meet with admissions, career services, and financial aid employees, as well as Savannah’s campus director, who hosted the event. This was all at no cost, and students had their own personal schedule lineup based on their predetermined interests to explore. They received lunch, an SU swag bag and SU scrubs, and additional souvenirs from each program.

Not only did our staff and faculty teach these sessions, but each program had many current students volunteer their Saturday to assist and teach these high school students. Our current students got to display their knowledge and share their plans for the future, helping the high school students gain more information and make plans of their own. Special thanks to our many student, faculty, and staff volunteers!
