Meet South University Graduate DaMarcus Sullivan

Since earning his Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (IT) online at South University in 2025, DaMarcus Sullivan has been applying his technical and professional skills to grow in his career at Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Alabama. After graduating, DaMarcus reenrolled at South University to level up his education again in our online Master of Business Administration (MBA) program.

Taking Classes Online at South University

When he discovered the IT program at South University, he knew it was the right fit and would help him reach his goals. “I chose my program because I'm technical,” he says. “I work in and with technology, and it goes hand-in-hand with engineering.”

At South University, DaMarcus found a learning environment that is flexible while still providing rigorous and valuable courses. “The programs are designed to balance theory with practical application,” he says. “South University is a good choice if you’re looking for a school that prepares you for the workforce with relevant skills and real-world experience.”

He also appreciates the resources available to support him in the classroom and the workplace, including networking and career services events that have helped him gain professional connections and build job readiness.

Guidance from South University Instructors and Staff

For DaMarcus, attending South University online has been about so much more than the course material. The relationships he has built as a student are a huge part of what he likes about the University. “The faculty are approachable and experienced,” says DaMarcus. “The faculty’s expertise and real-world experience helped bridge the gap between academics and industry expectations.”

In addition to his instructors, DaMarcus's academic and financial aid advisors have had a profound impact on his growth and success. He shares, “Kindra, my amazing and empowering academic advisor, pledged to be with me along my journey and that, no matter what that journey looked like, nor the storms that I undoubtedly knew I would face, she would be there to champion me on to the finish line. She honors that promise and continues to be a champion for not only myself, but all of her students.”

Applying Classroom Lessons at Toyota for Career Success

DaMarcus currently works as a production team leader at Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Alabama. There, he coordinates, guides, and trains team members who assemble and test engines for the brand’s vehicles, including the Tacoma pickup. Like with every job that involves technology, the role is fast-paced and constantly changing. Marcus must regularly adapt to new tools and processes—a skill he strengthened in the IT program at South University. The communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills he built in his IT program are equally critical for his success. Now, he can also apply what he learns in his MBA classes on leadership theory, operations and supply chain management, quantitative analysis, project management, and more.

Recently, DaMarcus was recognized with a Star of Southern Automotive Manufacturing award from the Alabama Automotive Manufacturers Association at their 2025 conference. His colleagues praised him for his ability to improve team morale as well as his positivity, customer-first mindset, and respect for others. DaMarcus is also Chair of the Alabama chapter of Toyota Young Professionals, which offers employees opportunities for networking and professional development.

Advice for South University Students

“My advice for current South University students is to actively engage with your academic advisor, courses, and instructors,” says DaMarcus. “Don’t hesitate to ask questions and seek help when needed.”

He also recommends that students take advantage of the other resources available at South University, such as career services, internships, and networking opportunities. Rather than waiting until right before graduation, he urges students to build their professional skills and connections early. However, to balance these activities along with schoolwork and your other responsibilities, you’ll need to stay organized and manage your time effectively, DaMarcus explains.

“Finally, focus on developing critical thinking and communication skills, as these will be valuable throughout your career,” he concludes. “Stay motivated and proactive, and make the most of your educational experience. Don't give up!”

On Being Resilient

In school and life, DaMarcus is no stranger to hard work and adversity. He’s proud of all he has accomplished and overcome. No matter what doubts or hesitations you face, he encourages others to go for their goals and follow their hearts.

“Never give up is the name of my story,” he says. “Continue to strive for excellence in all that you do, and create the success that looks and feels how YOU want it to look and feel. You are not in competition with anyone other than yourself, so make it count and count yourself in, because society can and will count you out if YOU allow it to do so. Believe in yourself and Dream BIG!”
