South University alumna Denesha Michelle Staley completed her Master of Science in Criminal Justice online in 2019. Her education prepared her to land a position as an Appeals Specialist at the South Carolina Court of Appeals, where she’s worked since 2020.

Having recently completed an undergraduate degree in criminal justice, Denesha felt that earning her master’s was the natural next step. Online learning appealed to her, as she needed a program that would allow her to continue to work and maintain other responsibilities. “South University was the best avenue for me to complete that. It gave me a flexible work, school, and home balance,” Denesha says. “[I am] forever thankful for South. This school allowed me to have education and motherhood.”

At South University, Denesha appreciated the caring and supportive nature of the staff and of her instructors in her online Criminal Justice master’s program. The courses also gave her valuable knowledge and skills, as she gained a greater understanding of current and historical criminal justice systems and the relationship between law enforcement, the courts, and corrections. Her courses covered ethics, research methods, leadership, personnel administration and management, criminology and more—all helping to prepare her well for her job search.

“The courses gave me an extra leg up because they were impressive to my now employer,” Denesha says. “It’s a great school and the staff are so nice. South University has the best staff I have ever experienced at a school. They are always there for you and keep up with your career.”
