Nursing Informatics: An Essential Role in 21st Century Healthcare

With skills in both nursing and information management, nursing informatics specialists play a critical role in today’s healthcare systems, especially as the use of electronic medical records and other healthcare technology continues to rise.

Informatics nurse specialists work to optimize technology and information systems to improve nursing and healthcare systems. Careers in nursing informatics involve designing and using informatics solutions and technology for all areas of nursing--including to enhance daily patient care and interactions, establish effective administrative and decision support systems, manage and deliver educational experiences, and support nursing research.

An informatics nurse specialist may work in traditional healthcare settings or for medical device vendors, software companies, web content providers, disease management companies, and government agencies. Nursing informatics salary varies by experience, employment type, geographic region, certification, and education, according to the HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society) 2017 Nursing Informatics Workforce Survey.
