I think of South University as a great opportunity, great environment. The staff here cares about the quality of the program and the concerns of the student, and they adapt themselves to meet the students' needs. It's not a cake walk, you're going to have to put in the work.

I was a little scared. I was a little nervous. It's been 23 years since I've been back in the college setting. Twenty years of service in the United States Army.

The word of the day is balance. I am married with six children, so you have to have a balance. In managing your career and what you're doing now and then the family life and excelling at education, too, and that's what I want to do.

I selected South University because the structures were very helpful for me. I do have high expectations of myself, and South University, they gave me the tools and provided me the opportunity to do just that, be successful in my education. I just want to be helpful to my community in any way, and just being able to provide care through the Physical Therapy Assistant Program, the sky's the limit, the sky's the limit.

My name is Brian Greenley, and right now I'm studying to be a physical therapist assistant.

Physical therapist assistants are healthcare providers who work under the supervision of physical therapists. Their duties include assisting the physical therapist in implementing treatment programs according to a plan of care, training patients in exercises and activities of daily living, conducting treatments using special equipment, administering modalities and other treatment procedures and reporting to the physical therapist on the patient's responses.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor & Statistics, there were approximately 81,230 physical therapist assistants employed in 2015. Employment of physical therapist assistants is projected to grow by 41% from 2014 to 2024, which is much faster than the average for all occupations (http://www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/physical-therapist-assistants-and-aides.htm#tab-6).

The PTA program offers a curriculum that is well-rounded in all fundamental concepts and theories as they apply to physical therapy modalities and rehabilitation procedures. The technical phase of the South University Virginia Beach Physical Therapist Assistant program consists of five academic quarters of lecture, laboratory, and clinical coursework. The academic program is taught during the day at the Virginia Beach campus.

Clinical Experience and Externship

The program has one part-time and two full-time clinical education experiences in which students complete 660 hours of clinical education. The first clinical experience is integrated into the second quarter of the technical phase of the program. The second and third clinicals take place during the last two quarters of the curriculum, with students returning to campus to complete a course in Current Rehabilitation Issues between the clinical experiences. This course allows for the integration of clinical experiences with didactic materials and the opportunity to correct deficiencies identified in the assessment of the student's performance in the clinic. The clinical experiences are chosen from a variety of settings, which may include hospitals, nursing homes, sub-acute facilities, and outpatient centers with which the program has entered into clinical agreements.
