Dr. Ben Herz outlines the structure and benefits of the South University Doctor of Occupational Therapy program. Learn what makes South University's program different in this category.
My name is Ben Herz, I am the program director of the Doctor of Occupational Therapy Program here at South University.
The program is actually designed for those people who already have an occupational therapy degree, both bachelors and masters. What we're doing is, we're concentrating more on the constructive critical thinking aspect, making sure that they're getting advanced knowledge using evidence based practices for that. Being able to support their area of practice, and look at the specialty area that they may be in, whether it's pediatrics or all through geriatrics, or even phycology.
There are two different tracks, the baccalaureate degree, of course, has a couple of courses that are gonna be prerequisite course that they would need to take before they come into the actual program. Masters can come in right away. I was one who went and got his doctorate after getting a degree, and it really brought me back to the nature of what occupational therapy is, and how to implement various different things into that. It just made me a better therapist, I think.
The Post Professional Occupational Therapy Doctorate at South University offers advanced educational experiences that are grounded in evidence based practice, critical analysis, and scholarship to prepare the advanced practitioner, educator or leader in becoming a change-agent within the dynamic landscape of Occupational Therapy.
The Department of Occupational Therapy educates students who integrate the art and science of Occupational Therapy. Faculty-mentors collaborate and work closely with students so they can foster a professional attitude of caring, policy development, and stewardship. Through engagement in diverse learning opportunities within the classroom and community, students graduate as competent and ethically-sound practitioners who will intuitively employ evidence based practices throughout the many emerging therapeutic approaches. The graduates of the POTD program will promote health and well-being through engagement in therapeutic occupations (e.g. everyday life activities), and thus, enhance quality of life for their clients wherever they live, work and play.
The Post-Professional Doctorate in Occupational Therapy is an innovative and quality graduate curriculum that builds the profession’s capacity to empower the advanced clinical-scholar. The program emphasizes advanced leadership, advanced pedagogy, and advanced clinical knowledge that is consistent with the vision of South University where critical thinking, professionalism and community service are tantamount to transformative learning.
